What is a doula and what does Essere Al Sicuro mean?
Well, in short, a doula provides support to the birthing mother. Doulas are there to help you make informed decisions and to help you birth your way. We provide you with information and you make the decision on how you want your birth to go. Doulas are not medically trained and we are not able to assist with the medical aspect of pregnancy and birth. Doulas can guide you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and into postpartum.
Essere Al Sicuro has a great deal of meaning to me. It literally means a safe place in Italian. When I was a child I was sexually abused and raped for several years. I told the right people but I wasn’t believed. Nothing was done as those who were supposed to care for me tried to convince me that what happened, didn’t really happen. Time and time again, when people should have protected me, they betrayed me. Because of that, I have a hard time trusting men in general. It doesn’t matter if I’ve known them for years and we are good friends, I still have that tiny voice in the back of my mind wondering. It’s been over 25 years since I was last abused and it still haunts me.
Pregnancy and birth are vulnerable times for ladies. It’s a time when we put our bodies into someone else’s hands. A time when we trust that that person(s) has our best interest at heart. That they actually care what happens to us and our babies. It can be a scary time as well. If you’ve gone through any type of abuse or betrayal of any kind, it’s hard to open up to those we are supposed to trust. It’s hard to trust those that are put in charge of our care, especially when we only see them for maybe 15 minutes once every month or so.
My mission is to combine these two things, being a doula and creating an Essere Al Sicuro (a safe place) for each and every one of my clients. We all deserve a safe place to open up about our fears and doubts. We deserve to trust those in the medical field as well as those who are there for support.
If you live nearby, we can go out for a coffee and chat a little. If you are far away, we can set up a time to talk through Facebook. Feel free to send me a message with any questions or comments you may have about a doula and
